Children in soapbox - By Mike Urban, Reading Eagle

The Mohnton residents were among 33 children who participated in Saturday's Reading All-American Soapbox Derby in Mohnton.

The course was about 750 steep yards of West Summit Street. The trip took about 12 seconds, and by the time the racers reached the bottom they were traveling more than 30 mph. The brakes smoked as they crossed the finish line.

Stuebner, 9, liked feeling the cool breeze as she sped down the hill on a hot afternoon.

The event was staged by the Mohnton Lions Club for the third straight year, and included more than 70 volunteer, race organizer Eric Burgis said.

Spectators lined the hill, cheering on the racers.

Peter Lambert, 9, of Morgantown won the Stock Division. Jayson Locke, 10, of Pottstown won the Super Stock Division.

Lambert and Locke will advance to the All-American Soapbox Derby July 25 in Akron, Ohio.

There was one injury, a girl who hurt her wrist after her car hit some hay bales at the end of the course.
